62-year-old Australian Prime Minister Marries In Private Canberra Ceremony

SYDNEY: Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has married his partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony at The Lodge, making him the first serving Australian leader to wed while in office.

The 62-year-old prime minister exchanged vows with Haydon, a financial services professional, on Saturday in the garden of his official residence in Canberra.

Albanese shared a short message on social media shortly after the ceremony, posting a single word Married alongside a video of him in a bow tie smiling beside his bride, who wore a long white gown as confetti fell around them.

In a joint statement, the couple said they were “delighted to share our love and commitment” with close family and friends who witnessed the intimate event.

The wedding comes more than a year after Albanese proposed on Valentine’s Day in 2024, saying at the time that he had found a partner he wished to spend the rest of his life with. The pair wrote their own vows and were married by a celebrant.

Adding a charming touch to the ceremony, the prime minister’s pet cavoodle, Toto, served as the ring bearer.

Guests were treated to beer from a Sydney brewery, and the couple walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s classic hit, Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours).

The newlyweds are expected to embark on a five-day honeymoon within Australia starting Monday.

Albanese, who divorced his former wife in 2019 and has an adult son, Nathan, met Haydon more than five years ago at a business event in Melbourne.

He has been leader of the centre-left Labor Party since 2019 and secured a second three-year term in a landslide victory in May 2025.
