IDANRE: Two seven-year-old boys have died after coming into contact with a live electric cable that reportedly fell on a shop along Apefon Road in Idanre, Ondo State.
The victims, identified as Oloyede Ayo and Clinton Koleola, died in the tragic incident on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
According to an eyewitness, the children were inside the shop when the live electric cable suddenly fell onto the building, causing panic among people in the area.
The eyewitness said the boys attempted to escape from the shop but unfortunately came into contact with the fallen cable and were electrocuted.
The incident reportedly attracted residents and other eyewitnesses to the scene, while a video circulating online captured the aftermath of the tragedy.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying preliminary findings indicated that a live electric cable had fallen on the shop.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the children were electrocuted while attempting to escape from the building.
Jimoh stated that the command had commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased children and assured them that the police would thoroughly investigate the matter.
The tragic incident has raised concerns over the dangers posed by fallen and exposed electricity cables, particularly in areas where residents and children may unknowingly come into contact with live wires.
Authorities are expected to establish what caused the cable to fall and determine whether any safety or maintenance failures contributed to the deaths.
