EDO STATE: The student community at Ekosodin, Edo State was thrown into panic on Saturday morning when a storey building on Benin’s Ekhator Street, the state capital, fell during the state’s early morning downpour, throwing the student body at Edo State’s Ekosodin into a state of fear on Saturday morning.
With the University of Benin being next door, Ekosodin is host to a large number of students who decide to live there instead of trying to find housing at the university premises
Ekosodin community borders the University of Benin and has a huge student population as those who cannot get accommodation in the school opt to live in the area.
Rapidospace News Online gathered that some of the trapped students have been rescued while the search for others is ongoing.
According to a student who was present at the scene and pleaded to remain anonymous, some of the trapped people were rescued by a university rescue team, but several of them suffered severe injuries.
He said that the wounded individuals were rushed immediately to the hospital for medical care. The student stated that the rescue team is still looking for a victim who called from inside the rubble and is still trapped. They have been searching for her and the other victims who are still trapped,” the student claimed.

It is said that the university team and the dean of student affairs are coordinating rescue operations on the scene.
As of the time of this report, the university management has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse building or the total number of individuals affected by the incident.
An official of the State Fire Service, who identified himself as Sylvester, said that three of its trucks were there to assist in the ongoing rescue process.
“Our men are on ground to help in the rescue mission,” he added.
The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is reportedly on site, leading the rescue operations in coordination with the university team.
