A woman has reportedly been banished from Umekpu village in Ogbaku, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, after being accused of selling her sister-in-law’s child for the sum of N800,000.
According to sources within the community, village authorities took disciplinary action after the allegation surfaced, declaring the woman persona non grata and ordering her immediate expulsion from the area.
A video circulating online shows the moment the woman was escorted out of the community by a crowd of villagers. In the footage, residents were seen chanting songs and mocking her as she was led away from the village.
Speaking in the video, a community leader explained the reason behind the decision, stating that the woman allegedly sold her brother’s wife’s son, an act the community considered unacceptable.
We are banishing her from our community, Umekpu Village in Ogbaku, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, the leader said.
She sold her sister-in-law’s son for N800,000, and for that reason, we have decided to banish her.”
The incident has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over child trafficking allegations and the method of traditional punishment carried out by the community.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter as of the time of filing this report.
