The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is not in a position to win the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the party’s immediate priority should be rebuilding its structure for future electoral success.
Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said the PDP should concentrate on securing victories in governorship, state assembly, and other sub-national elections while strengthening its internal structures ahead of the 2031 general election.
According to the former Rivers State governor, the party must be realistic about its current political standing rather than creating false expectations among its supporters.
He maintained that the PDP is facing significant internal challenges that cannot be resolved within a short period, making a presidential victory in 2027 unlikely.
I have always said that the PDP cannot win the presidential election now. What we should be doing is winning some sub-national elections and reorganizing the party in preparation for 2031, Wike said.
He stressed that political parties must be honest with Nigerians about their level of preparedness instead of assuming that every election is automatically winnable.
The minister noted that aspiring to lead a country as complex as Nigeria requires a strong and united political platform, adding that leadership cannot be built overnight.
We must be very clear with the people. I don’t believe in deceiving ourselves by saying that because an election is approaching, we must win it.
Becoming President is not something you simply decide within a few months. We have internal crises, and you cannot wake up six months before an election and expect to govern a country like Nigeria,” he added.
Wike’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the PDP to resolve internal disputes and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political parties continue consultations, alliances, and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
