AGBOR: The Eboma family of Idumu-Oza Community in Agbor Kingdom, Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, is seeking justice after the tragic death of their daughter, Etunim Henrieta Ebere Sunday (née Eboma), a devoted mother of three.
The family alleges that Etunim was subjected to prolonged domestic abuse by her husband, Mr. Ebere Sunday, who reportedly wanted to marry another woman he claimed was pregnant for him.
In an emotional conversation with Ika Newspaper, the family patriarch, Mr. Friday Eboma, described the ordeal that led to his daughter’s death
Ebere Sunday beat Etunim to death so he could marry another woman he claimed was carrying his child, Eboma said.
It was only after her death that we realized the extent of the abuse she endured. She suffered severe and repeated beatings that eventually led to her untimely demise.
According to the family, the final act of violence occurred on January 23, 2026. Etunim’s children recounted that their father locked her inside the house and beat her with a Lister generator belt, leaving her unconscious.
She was immediately rushed to General Hospital, Agbor, for treatment, but despite medical intervention, her condition deteriorated. She succumbed to her injuries on March 24, 2026, leaving her children and extended family devastated.
Ebere’s family members have tried to negotiate with us, but we will not accept it, Eboma emphasized.
We want full accountability. He must answer for the death of our daughter and explain the circumstances surrounding it.
The family revealed that Ebere, a carpenter, met Etunim during a road construction project in Idumu-Oza. From the start, he was persistent in pursuing her marriage, and shortly after their union, the abuse began.
Reports indicate that Etunim was beaten both at home and in her shop in Imudia Street, Agbor, illustrating a disturbing pattern of domestic violence that left her traumatized.
Her younger sister, Blessing Eboma, recalled receiving a distress call from her sister, prompting her urgent travel from Lagos to Agbor.
My sister lived in fear and constant trauma. She was tortured to death by her own husband, and the pain of losing her is indescribable, Blessing said.
The Eboma family is urging law enforcement and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into Etunim’s death and ensure that justice is served. Our daughter’s life mattered. Domestic violence cannot continue to destroy families without consequences, the patriarch said.
Etunim’s tragic story highlights a broader social issue: domestic violence remains a silent epidemic in Nigeria, with many victims suffering in silence due to fear, stigma, or lack of protection.
Cases like this underscore the urgent need for stronger legal frameworks, community awareness, and proactive policing to protect women and children in vulnerable situations.
The Idumu-Oza community and Agbor Kingdom residents have expressed shock and grief over the incident. Many have joined the family in demanding justice, condemning domestic abuse and urging authorities to act swiftly.
Attempts to contact Ebere Sunday for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The family vows to ensure that he faces justice and that Etunim’s death does not go unpunished.
We will not rest until those responsible are held accountable. No one should believe they can take another person’s life without consequences, the family insisted.
Etunim’s death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse and the importance of vigilance by family, friends, and communities in protecting victims. It also raises the need for stronger societal mechanisms to prevent such tragedies and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
