Why Kano Deputy Governor Should Resign — Commissioner

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has said the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, should resign following his decision not to defect with Governor Abba Yusuf to the All-Progressives Congress.

Waiya made the call on Thursday while speaking with journalists in Kano, insisting that effective governance requires trust, loyalty and shared political alignment within the executive council.

According to him, it would be inappropriate for a deputy governor who no longer belongs to the same political platform as the governor to continue participating in sensitive government deliberations.

This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should be part of routine executive council meetings,” Waiya said.

He added that the absence of political alignment could raise concerns about confidentiality and trust within government.

Who knows with whom he might share important government secrets? Governance is based on trust, and you cannot trust someone who is no longer politically aligned with you, the commissioner stated.

Waiya described resignation as the most honourable option available to the deputy governor.

If I were him, I would humbly resign, he added.

The commissioner’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC.

Waiya described the governor’s move as being in the best interest of the state, noting that alignment with the Federal Government would enhance access to development projects and federal interventions.

Governor Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, recently announced his defection to the ruling party, citing the need to strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government.

Rapidospace reports that Yusuf was formally received into the APC at a ceremony in Kano, alongside several political office holders, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, local government chairmen and councillors, a development that has significantly weakened the NNPP’s presence in the state.
