Why IGP Disu Replace Police Spokesman Anthony Placid After Just Three Months?

Barely three months after appointing DCP Anthony Okon Placid as the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has named CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu as the new Force Public Relations Officer.

The sudden change has raised questions about the latest shake-up in the police hierarchy, with the force announcing that Iniedu would now lead its public communication efforts.

In a statement issued on Friday by the outgoing spokesman, Anthony Placid, the Nigeria Police described Iniedu as a highly experienced officer with a strong background in strategic communication, operational policing, intelligence management, administration and institutional accountability.

A native of Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Iniedu graduated from the University of Uyo with a degree in Pure Chemistry. Over the years, he has received professional training in investigative interviewing, crime scene management, intelligence analysis, strategic communication and human rights-based policing.

Before his latest appointment, Iniedu headed the Complaint Response Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he coordinated the handling of public complaints and spearheaded initiatives aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

He previously served as Public Relations Officer of the Police College of Information Technology in Kobape, Ogun State, and held several operational and administrative positions across the country.

His career has seen him serve as Operations Officer at the Maisandari Division in Yobe State, Area Crime Officer at the Umuahia Area Command in Abia State, Staff Officer at the IGP Secretariat, Second-in-Command of the 50 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Kubwa, and Officer-in-Charge of the Force Headquarters Situation Room, where he oversaw the coordination and dissemination of crime and security information nationwide.

According to the statement, IGP Disu expressed confidence in the new police spokesman’s ability to strengthen the Force Public Relations Department and deepen public engagement as part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police.

Iniedu succeeds Placid, who assumed office on March 8, 2026, following the exit of Benjamin Hundeyin.

The latest appointment signals another strategic move by IGP Disu to reshape the Nigeria Police leadership and reinforce communication between the force and the public.
