Wheelbarrow pusher st@bs trader to de@th in Port Harcourt Fruits market

PORTHARCOURT: The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the fatal stabbing of a trader during a dispute at Fruit Market Oil Mill Rumuokwurusi in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Police said the incident occurred early Saturday when a trader, identified as Higightor Wenem, reportedly asked a wheelbarrow pusher, Zakara Afaaruwu, to move his wheelbarrow to create space for goods. The request allegedly led to an argument that escalated into violence.

During the confrontation, the suspect was said to have stabbed the trader with a dagger. The victim, a native of Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State, was rushed to the Military Hospital Port Harcourt but was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have been deposited in a morgue pending autopsy.

The incident reportedly sparked tension between members of Hausa and Benue communities around the market before security operatives intervened to restore calm.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the suspect has been arrested and is in custody while investigations continue.

Authorities say the situation has been stabilised, with ongoing monitoring to prevent further unrest.
