WAEC Confirms Suleiman Kum as New Nigeria National Office Head

LAGOS: The West African Examinations Council has officially confirmed 56-year-old Suleiman Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office, succeeding Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure ended on October 1, 2026.

Kum’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Nigeria National Office as the examination body moves to strengthen its administration, examination security and technological innovation.

Before his elevation, Kum served as Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office and was the council’s Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration until the end of August.

The Rapidospace news had earlier reported that Kum emerged as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office.

According to the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Moyosola Adesina, Kum is a seasoned test developer, examination administrator and executive who has spent more than two decades serving the council.

He joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as an Assistant Registrar II and has since occupied several important positions across the organisation.

Over the years, Kum has been involved in several administrative and technological initiatives within WAEC.

He was particularly recognised for pioneering Variable Data Printing and enhanced code-security features in security printing, initiatives designed to strengthen the integrity and security of examination materials.

He also played a role in replacing council-wide attendance systems with facial-recognition biometric devices and was involved in the successful implementation of Achievement Tests using the Computer-Based Examination mode.

WAEC said Kum has extensive knowledge of test development, test administration, examination security, as well as the management of branch and zonal offices.

Throughout his career, he has served in several strategic positions, including Assistant Registrar II and Head of Examinations Security in Awka, Assistant Registrar I and Head of Examinations Security in Yola, and Assistant Registrar I and Head of Examinations Security in Makurdi.

He also served as Senior Assistant Registrar I and Branch Controller in Gusau, as well as Principal Assistant Registrar and Branch Controller in Kano.

His other responsibilities included serving as Deputy Registrar and Head of the Security Printing Department, Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt, Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja, Director of Administration and Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration.

Kum, who hails from Plateau State, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria.

He is also currently pursuing a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration and Planning at the National Open University of Nigeria.

WAEC described his career as one marked by integrity, diligence, innovation and commitment to service.

The examination council said his leadership across different portfolios had earned him several institutional commendations, accolades and awards both within WAEC and beyond.

Kum takes over from Dr Amos Dangut, whose three-year tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office expired on October 1, 2026.

Following the expiration of his tenure, Dangut assumed office as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of WAEC, marking another major leadership responsibility within the examination council.

With his extensive experience in examination administration, security printing, test development and technology-driven reforms, Kum now assumes responsibility for leading WAEC’s Nigeria National Office at a time when examination integrity and the adoption of technology remain critical priorities.

The council expressed confidence in his experience and record of service as he begins his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office
