A visa is an official authorization, usually in the form of a stamp placed in an international passport, that grants an individual permission to travel from their country of origin to another where they are not a citizen. For Nigerians seeking to travel to the United States, the type of visa granted depends largely on the purpose of the visit.

The United States often referred to as the home of the brave and the land of the free is widely celebrated as the land of opportunity and the American Dream. This reputation makes it a prime destination for millions of people around the world. Every year, thousands of Nigerians apply for U.S. visas in hopes of accessing better educational, economic, and social opportunities.

However, U.S. immigration procedures are strictly regulated. Anyone who is not a U.S. citizen must obtain a visa legally before being granted entry through official channels.

The U.S. is often described as a nation of immigrants. Apart from Native Americans, most citizens trace their origins to migration waves throughout history. Immigration remains a major driver of population growth in the country.

Between 2010 and 2016 alone, the United States admitted, on average, just over one million immigrants annually — a figure that has continued to rise.

Yet, since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. immigration processes have become significantly more stringent, with tighter security measures and stricter vetting procedures.

Types of U.S. Visas

U.S. visas are broadly divided into two main categories:

  1. Non-Immigrant Visas

  2. Immigrant Visas

Non-Immigrant Visas are temporary permits granted to individuals who wish to enter the U.S. for a specific purpose and for a limited period of time. These visas do not grant permanent residency or the right to work in the U.S. Instead, they allow for activities such as business, tourism, education, or medical treatment.

For example, visitors may apply for a B-1/B-2 visa to conduct business, attend conferences, or simply enjoy leisure travel in the United States. However, this visa does not permit employment with a U.S. company.

Immigrant Visas, on the other hand, are for those seeking permanent residency in the U.S. These visas pave the way to obtaining a Green Card, which grants the holder the right to live and work indefinitely in the country.
