US troops arrive in Nigeria for training, intelligence support

About 100 personnel from the United States Armed Forces have arrived in Nigeria to assist local forces with training, technical cooperation and intelligence sharing as part of ongoing security collaboration between both nations.

Nigerian military authorities confirmed the deployment, explaining that the assistance was requested to strengthen capacity in tackling armed militant groups and other security threats affecting parts of the country.

Officials stressed that the American troops will not take part in combat operations and that Nigerian forces will retain full operational command.

The move comes after a period of diplomatic tension, including accusations by former US President Donald Trump alleging that Abuja failed to protect Christian communities claims Nigerian authorities have consistently rejected.

Nigeria has for years faced security challenges ranging from insurgency in the northeast to banditry and armed attacks in other regions.

The extremist group Boko Haram remains one of the most prominent militant threats, although analysts note that victims of violence include people from multiple religious backgrounds.

Earlier discussions between defence officials also confirmed that a small team from United States Africa Command had already been working in Nigeria to provide intelligence assistance and strategic support.

Security analysts say the latest deployment reflects ongoing international cooperation aimed at improving Nigeria’s counter-insurgency capabilities while avoiding direct foreign combat involvement.
