ABUJA: The United States Embassy in Abuja has warned its citizens in Nigeria to exercise caution ahead of a planned protest in the Federal Capital Territory under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.
The protest, scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, is expected to take place around Eagle Square and the Central Business District, according to organisers led by rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), described the demonstration as a historic and peaceful march” aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since his controversial extradition from Kenya in June 2021.
In a statement released on Friday, the US Embassy cautioned that the planned protest could lead to roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations between police and protesters, urging Americans to avoid the protest zones and limit movement across the city.
“The Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to avoid Eagle Square and the Central Business District and to severely limit all movement throughout Abuja on Monday, the alert read.
It further advised that children remain at home and domestic staff commuting from outside the city should not report to work that day.
The Embassy also urged Americans to stay alert, avoid large gatherings, monitor local news, and maintain a low profile in public spaces such as shopping malls, theatres, and places of worship..+
Kanu is currently facing terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
