Two Police Officers Escape Lynching After Ogun Residents Mistake Them for Kidnappers-Ogun Police PRO

Two serving police officers narrowly escaped jungle justice after residents of Kanuyi Community in Simawa, Ogun State, allegedly mistook them for kidnappers and attempted to take the law into their own hands.

The Ogun State Police Command has since clarified the incident, describing reports circulating on social media as misleading and confirming that the two individuals accused of being kidnappers are bona fide officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the incident occurred on Sunday, May 31, 2026, when the Simawa Police Division received information at about 11:00 a.m. that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by members of the community.

According to the police, officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they rescued the two men from an angry crowd and took them into protective custody for proper identification and investigation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were not criminals but serving police officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State.

Further findings showed that the officers had mistakenly lost their way while returning from an official assignment in Sagamu, Ogun State. Their unfamiliar presence in the community reportedly raised suspicion among residents, who subsequently believed they were kidnappers.

The police spokesperson explained that extensive verification procedures were carried out to establish their identities.

Verification conducted by the Command confirmed their identities through valid police identity cards, official deployment documents, uniforms, and other service materials. Their parent formation also authenticated their status as bona fide members of the Nigeria Police Force engaged in lawful duties,” the statement said.

The Command further discovered that before police operatives arrived at the scene, the officers had already been searched, photographed, and video-recorded by some residents.

The images and videos were subsequently shared on social media, leading to widespread circulation of false claims that suspected kidnappers had been apprehended in the community.

Although the officers escaped physical assault, the police noted that the incident subjected them to unnecessary public suspicion, embarrassment, and emotional distress despite their role in protecting lives and property.

The Ogun State Police Command commended residents for remaining vigilant and actively participating in community security efforts but warned against mob actions and premature conclusions.

The Command urged members of the public to verify information through appropriate security agencies before sharing content online or taking actions that could endanger innocent individuals.

Police authorities also emphasized the dangers associated with jungle justice, noting that wrongful accusations can lead to tragic consequences and undermine ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing atmosphere of fear and insecurity across many communities, where heightened vigilance sometimes results in mistaken identity and false accusations.

Authorities have appealed for calm while urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies and allow proper investigations whenever suspicious activities are observed.

The rescued officers have since been reunited with their unit after their identities and official assignments were fully verified by the Ogun State Police Command.
