Two PDP Chieftains Defect to ADC in Cross River Amid Party Crisis

CALABAR: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has suffered a political setback following the defection of two prominent party figures to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal crises and divisions within the opposition party.

The defectors Dr. Mkpang Coco-Bassey and Senator Gershom Bassey were both governorship aspirants of the PDP during the 2023 elections in the state.

In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 11 in Calabar South Local Government Area, Coco-Bassey formally announced his decision to leave the party.

The engineer and President of the Calabar Forum in the United Kingdom stated that his resignation followed careful consideration after years of loyalty to the party.

This decision did not come lightly. I have been a committed and faithful member of the party, contributing my time, energy and resources to its growth and success, he said.

Coco-Bassey added that his resignation takes immediate effect while expressing appreciation for the opportunities he had during his time in the PDP.

Similarly, former senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Gershom Bassey, submitted a resignation letter to the PDP Ward Chairman of Ward 9 in Calabar South.

The former lawmaker, who described himself as a founding member of the party, said his decision was influenced by persistent internal conflicts within the PDP.

According to him, the divisions within the party have weakened its unity and undermined the principles upon which it was founded.

He noted that remaining in the party had become increasingly difficult because the system no longer reflects the ideals he believes in.

Both politicians are expected to align with the African Democratic Congress coalition linked to supporters of Peter Obi and other political actors seeking to strengthen opposition politics ahead of future elections.

The defections add to growing concerns about internal challenges within the PDP in Cross River, as political realignments continue across Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

Analysts believe the development could reshape the political dynamics in the state as parties begin to position themselves for upcoming electoral contests.
