Maiduguri, Borno State The killing of a 14-year-old girl by a stray bullet in Maiduguri has drawn sharp condemnation from Amnesty International (AI), which is calling on the Nigerian government to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the incident.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday, April 4, as the girl went about household chores inside her home. Initial reports indicate that the fatal shot may have been fired by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) celebrating a nearby wedding with gunfire.
A family member said, She lived in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) quarters. She had just applied henna for herself and her mother, joyfully preparing for a family wedding, when her life was suddenly cut short. It was entirely preventable.”
The girl’s funeral took place on Sunday morning, leaving her family and the community grieving while demanding answers. Amnesty International stressed that reckless use of firearms by security personnel and civilians alike must be investigated to prevent future loss of life.
This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder of the persistent insecurity in Borno State and the wider Northeast, where civilians often bear the brunt of both insurgent attacks and indiscriminate violence.
In recent years, the region has faced repeated Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks, frequent military operations, and rising tensions between communities and local security actors, creating a climate of fear.
Residents of Maiduguri and surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable, with many caught in the crossfire during military patrols, security crackdowns, and even celebratory gunfire during events. The use of firearms in public celebrations, while culturally common in some communities, has increasingly posed life-threatening risks for ordinary citizens.
Amnesty International has highlighted that beyond insurgent violence, poorly regulated armed groups and security lapses have worsened civilian casualties. “Nigerian authorities must take proactive measures to protect residents, particularly children, and ensure accountability for those whose negligence or recklessness endangers lives,” the statement said.
The organisation urged the Federal Government to implement stricter firearm regulations, enforce accountability for security personnel, and raise public awareness about the dangers of indiscriminate gunfire. It also called for emergency measures to secure homes, schools, and public spaces, noting that no child should be killed by preventable incidents.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over security in Northern Nigeria, where civilians increasingly feel unsafe amid overlapping threats from insurgency, communal clashes, and militarized responses.
Human rights advocates insist that addressing these systemic security challenges is essential to protect innocent lives and restore public confidence.
