ASABA: Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko has revealed that President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and at least 97 senators are supporting the creation of Anioma State.
Nwoko made the announcement over the weekend during the Izu Anioma Towns Union event in Abuja, which also marked the launch of the first Anioma Cultural Festival, popularly called Anioma Day.
According to the senator, the campaign for Anioma State has gained significant momentum, thanks to widespread legislative support and consensus among the region’s communities.
The proposed bill, initially introduced by Nwoko two years ago, aims to carve Anioma State out of the existing nine local government areas in Delta North: four in Aniocha, four in Oshimili, two in Ika, and three in Ndokwa.
Some neighboring communities, including Igbanke, have also expressed interest in joining the new state.
Describing the level of support as unprecedented in Nigeria’s history of state creation, Nwoko emphasized, only one state will be created in Nigeria, and that one state will be Anioma.
He added that the Senate and House Committees on Constitutional Amendment, which feature representatives from all states, have agreed that the South-East region deserves a sixth state to achieve regional balance.
Anioma has emerged as the most viable option, he said, and the initiative has the full backing of both President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio, contingent on meeting constitutional requirements.
“We have done our homework. Extensive lobbying, consultations, and engagements are ongoing. Nothing is being left undone,” Nwoko stated.
