ABUJA: The Supreme Court of Nigeria has officially confirmed the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad.
Justice Tanko, the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the age of 72.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, Dr Akande Festus.
According to the statement, Justice Tanko’s tenure as Chief Justice, which lasted from 2019 to 2022, was characterized by a strong commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence and the fair administration of justice.
The statement noted that his leadership left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s judiciary through key reforms aimed at strengthening the appellate system and improving procedural efficiency.
He was also credited with championing the professional development of judges and judicial staff, as well as promoting transparency and accountability within the judicial system.
