ABEOKUTA: A coalition of former lawmakers from across Nigeria’s northern and southern regions has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was announced during a summit at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, organized by the National Forum of Former Legislators and convened by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The event drew several prominent political figures, including former Senate President Ken Nnamani, ex-Speakers of the House of Representatives Patricia Olubunmi Etteh and Yakubu Dogara, members of the Federal Executive Council, and other dignitaries.
Speaking on behalf of the president, Gbajabiamila described the gathering as a rare opportunity for friends, former colleagues, and patriots to align behind Tinubu’s efforts to push through difficult but necessary reforms.
National unity is the sine qua non for national development. Where there is no peace, there cannot be progress. Unity does not mean the absence of disagreements it means that even when we argue, we do so with respect and a shared purpose, Gbajabiamila said.
He praised Tinubu’s approach to governance, noting that the president had pursued reforms not for electoral gain but out of a commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity.
Gbajabiamila highlighted achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including the removal of inflated fuel subsidy claims, the creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to expand access to tertiary education, and the signing of tax reforms to ensure fairness and accountability.
Fixing long-broken systems comes with costs, sacrifice, and time. But our vision is clear and our destination certain, he added.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who hosted the summit, applauded the forum and its convener for prioritizing national unity.
This summit demonstrates a deep sense of responsibility towards strengthening our oneness as a country, the governor said.
The ex-legislators’ endorsement signals growing elite support for President Tinubu as he seeks to consolidate his reform agenda and prepare for the 2027 elections
