AGBOR: The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected serial killer and prison escapee, Michael Ezenwai, after he attempted to sell the mobile phone of 26-year-old Christabel Egedefe, who was recently murdered in her apartment in Agbor, Ika North-East Local Government Area of the state.
Christabel was found dead in her home shortly after the suspect was apprehended.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 19, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that Ezenwai escaped from the Oko Correctional Centre during the 2020 EndSARS jailbreak and is believed to be responsible for multiple violent crimes.
Preliminary investigations also linked him to the syndicate that raped and murdered UNIBEN student, Uwaila Omorzua, inside a church in 2020.
According to the police, the Divisional Police Officer in Agbor received intelligence on October 24 that Ezenwai was attempting to dispose of a suspected stolen phone.
Operatives were immediately deployed to the location, where the suspect was arrested.
During initial interrogation, Ezenwai falsely claimed he brought the device from Libya. However, the phone later rang, and a caller identified it as belonging to her sister, Christabel Egedefe.
Acting on this lead, officers proceeded to Christabel’s home and discovered her dead in her apartment.
Confronted with the evidence, the suspect confessed to killing her during a robbery operation on October 23.
He reportedly attacked her after she refused to give him the keys to her motorcycle and stole her mobile phones afterward. Police said he later changed his story after initially trying to implicate the victim’s father.
Further investigations revealed that Ezenwai is a serial murderer with a history of involvement in multiple violent crimes prior to his 2020 escape.
“The suspect confessed to the murder of Christabel Egedefe and admitted to escaping from the Oko Correctional Centre during the EndSARS jailbreak.
He is currently in custody, and investigation is ongoing, Edafe stated.
The police assured the public that efforts are ongoing to dismantle the suspect’s criminal network and ensure justice for the victims.
