Samsung is preparing to roll out a major security enhancement for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets with the upcoming Android 17-based One UI 9 update, introducing stricter protections against unauthorized access and brute-force attacks.
According to reports, the new feature will significantly reduce the number of failed screen unlock attempts allowed before a device automatically enters lockdown mode, making it much harder for hackers or thieves to gain access through repeated password guesses
The Android 17 update is expected to introduce a progressive lockout system that increases waiting times after every incorrect password attempt.
Under the reported security changes:
- Five failed unlock attempts will trigger a one-minute lockout.
- Six failed attempts will result in a five-minute lockout.
- Seven incorrect attempts will extend the waiting period to 15 minutes.
- Eight failed attempts will trigger a 30-minute lockout.
- Nine consecutive failures will lead to a 90-minute lockout.
- Ten failed attempts will result in a four-hour lockout.
- Eleven failed attempts will trigger a 12-hour lockout.
- Twelve failed attempts will require users to wait 24 hours before trying again.
If a user reaches the 13th consecutive failed unlock attempt, the Galaxy device could automatically enter a lockdown mode that may require a factory reset before it can be used again.
The new security system is designed to defend against brute-force attacks, a common hacking technique in which cybercriminals use automated tools to repeatedly test thousands of password combinations until they find the correct one.
Samsung’s new restrictions are expected to make such attacks practically impossible by dramatically increasing the waiting period after each failed attempt.
Another notable improvement is that repeated attempts using the same incorrect password will reportedly not count as additional failed attempts, preventing accidental lockouts while still protecting the device from automated attacks
Reports also suggest Samsung will impose an overall lifetime limit of 20 failed unlock attempts over a 20-year period for devices running Android 17-based One UI 9.
While the policy sounds unusual, it is intended to prevent unlimited password-guessing attempts throughout a device’s lifespan.
Samsung has not yet released the stable version of One UI 9 for eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets, although Android 17 is currently undergoing beta testing.
However, Samsung’s latest flagship foldable smartphones—including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8—already ship with Android 17 and One UI 9 pre-installed.
The software update is expected to become available for additional compatible Galaxy devices in the coming months.
The reported security improvements demonstrate Samsung’s growing focus on protecting users’ personal information as smartphone cyberattacks become increasingly sophisticated.
With stronger password protections, extended lockout periods and enhanced anti-brute-force safeguards, the Android 17-based One UI 9 update is expected to provide Galaxy users with one of the most secure mobile experiences Samsung has offered to date.
