PORTHARCOURT: The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The process began during plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, where the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct against the governor. The session was broadcast live on Channels Television.
According to the lawmakers, the notice signed by 26 members of the Assembly outlined alleged violations they said were contrary to provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaker Amaewhule disclosed that the notice of allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with constitutional requirements.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read out a separate notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh.
The impeachment moves marks the latest escalation in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, which has deepened divisions within the state’s executive and legislative arms of government.
Further details are expected as the process unfolds.
