National Assembly Pledges to Deliver Long-Awaited Constitutional Reforms

ABUJA: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has assured Nigerians that the 10th Assembly will deliver on the long-awaited amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Speaking at the National Public Hearing on the constitutional review in Abuja on Monday, Abbas said the green chamber is committed to ensuring that the process succeeds after several failed attempts by past assemblies.

As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency, Abbas stated. We will engage the state assemblies respectfully and transparently to secure their concurrence.

We will also continue to work with the executive and with you, the people, to ensure the amendment process proceeds smoothly.

The Speaker commended citizens for actively participating in the public hearing, noting that their voices would play a decisive role in shaping reforms that cut across all sectors of society.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, reaffirmed that the review process would be inclusive and reflective of diverse perspectives.

Representing President Bola Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, praised the committee for creating a broad-based platform that engages civil society, political parties, professional groups, and traditional institutions.

He also reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions.

The constitutional review is expected to address wide-ranging proposals, from governance reforms to judicial independence, as lawmakers seek to align the 1999 Constitution with Nigeria’s evolving democratic realities.
