PORTHARCOURT: A shocking incident has rocked the Choba area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where a pregnant 300-level student at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, allegedly burned her boyfriend, Sunny Amadi, alive following a domestic dispute.
The disturbing event occurred late on Saturday night around 11pm at No. 11B Okoro Street, leaving residents in disbelief.
Eyewitnesses reported that an argument between the couple may have escalated into the fatal act of violence.
Sunny Amadi, 32, from Elibrada community in Emohua Local Government Area, was reportedly the father of Cynthia’s unborn child. Neighbours rushed him to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) immediately after the attack, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The suspect, Cynthia Chukwundah, who also sustained burn injuries, initially fled the scene but was later apprehended by law enforcement. She is currently hospitalised and undergoing treatment.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed that Cynthia’s critical health condition has made it difficult for her to give a full account of what transpired. Nevertheless, police investigations are underway.
SP Iringe-Koko stated: The Rivers State Police Command is aware of the reported fire incident at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt. Preliminary reports indicate that Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student of UNIPORT, allegedly set her boyfriend, Saint Sunny Amadi, ablaze.
The victim, aged 32 and from Elibrada in Emohua LGA, was taken to UPTH but sadly died from his injuries.”
She continued, The suspect is in critical condition and currently receiving treatment. As she is heavily pregnant and injured, she has been unable to make a detailed statement,but will be questioned when medically stable.
The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, and a thorough investigation is ongoing.
