LAGOS: The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the five bodies discovered along Oreta riverbank in Igbogbo, Ikorodu Local Government Area, last Wednesday were victims of a cult-related attack.
Residents were thrown into panic after stumbling upon the lifeless bodies of young men sprawled by the riverside. A circulating video, under 30 seconds, showed the victims—one in a blue hoodie facedown and another in a black-and-white shirt with bloodstains nearby.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh said the incident was cult-related, adding that scene-of-crime experts had been dispatched and investigations were ongoing.
We recovered the bodies and have directed further probe into the circumstances. Anti-cultism units across the state are fully engaged, while arrests continue,” Jimoh stated.
The police boss noted that over 26 suspects have already been apprehended, with more in custody as part of intensified operations.
He also disclosed the deployment of specialised coastal forces to troubled zones like Lekki and Ikorodu.
“Parents and guardians must dissuade their children from joining cults. This menace is no longer limited to the idle; even artisans are being lured in, he warned.
The discovery comes amid a string of cult-related killings across Lagos. Just a day earlier, a man was gruesomely murdered in Bayeku, another Ikorodu community.
Earlier in the week, three suspected cultists were slain during a festival on Lagos Island.
The Executive Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Hammed Aroyewun, described the Oreta killings as “a tragic incident that shook the community,” assuring residents of swift government and security response.
Police say operations are ongoing to replicate their Mushin anti-cult success strategy in Ikorodu, with constant patrols aimed at restoring calm.
