Police Arrest Man Over Illegal ‘Obi of Lagos’ Installation Ceremony

LAGOS: The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man for allegedly attempting to mislead the public by unlawfully parading himself as the Obi of Lagos during an unauthorised installation ceremony.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, confirming that the suspect and three accomplices were taken into custody.

According to the police, intelligence reports revealed that the group had concluded plans to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion Palace of Obi of Lagos State on Saturday at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.

“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives sealed off the venue to prevent a breach of public peace and to protect unsuspecting residents from being deceived, Oluseyi said.

The command reportedly deployed heavy security, including conventional officers, the Eko Strike Force, and other tactical units, to ensure the event was completely disrupted and public order preserved.

Oluseyi added that the suspects remain in detention while investigations continue, stressing that the outcome will be made public and those found guilty will face prosecution.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, warned Lagos residents against falling victim to impostors exploiting cultural and traditional institutions for personal gain.

Such unlawful acts are not only criminal but also a direct affront to the statutes of Lagos State and a threat to societal peace.

The command will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law on anyone found undermining legality, order, and the integrity of our state,” the CP stated.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to decisively curb activities that could destabilise the state under the guise of traditional authority.
