Plateau Governor Mutfwang Formally Resigns from PDP, Two Weeks After Joining APC

JOS: Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), about two weeks after it was publicly announced that he had joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated 29 December 2025, addressed to the Ward Chairman of Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The letter was formally received and acknowledged by the ward leadership on 30 December 2025.

Mr Mutfwang’s resignation came approximately 12 days after the National Chairman of the APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, announced that the Plateau governor had defected to the ruling party.

The announcement was made on 18 December 2025 during the APC’s 14th National Caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Addressing party leaders at the meeting, Prof. Yilwatda, who is also from Plateau State, described Mutfwang’s defection as a major political boost for the APC, particularly in strengthening the party’s dominance in the North-Central geopolitical zone.

With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC, the party chairman said, underscoring the significance of the development for the party’s national outlook and electoral prospects.

The sequence of events indicates that Governor Mutfwang joined the APC before formally exiting the PDP, the party on whose platform he was elected governor in 2023.

In his resignation letter, the governor expressed appreciation to the PDP for giving him the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

He also thanked party leaders, members and supporters for their backing throughout his time in the party.

“I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me with the political platform to participate in the democratic process.

I acknowledge the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me,” he stated.

Governor Mutfwang explained that his decision was influenced by prevailing political realities and his desire to pursue effective leadership and service delivery, which he believes can be better achieved on a different political platform.

With this move, Mr Mutfwang joins a growing list of PDP governors who have defected to the APC, including the governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta and Enugu states.
