UGHELLI: An Executive Assistant to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Olorogun Samson, has stepped down from his position as he prepares to contest in the 2027 general elections.
Samson announced his resignation in a letter dated March 2, 2026, which he later shared publicly on Wednesday. In the letter, he explained that the decision followed consultations with family members and political stakeholders and was necessary for him to focus fully on his ambition to represent Ughelli South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly.
According to him, the growing intensity of political activities ahead of the 2027 polls made it difficult to effectively combine his responsibilities as a government aide with the demands of active political campaigning.
With utmost respect and a heavy but hopeful heart, I write to formally tender my resignation as Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State,” Samson stated in the letter.
He noted that the decision was not taken lightly, explaining that it followed deep reflection, prayers and discussions with trusted advisers and political associates.
Samson further stated that the revised timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission had accelerated the political process across the country, thereby requiring aspirants to begin preparations early.
“Following the revised timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the political process has accelerated, and the demands of my aspiration to represent the good people of Ughelli South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly now require my full presence and dedication,” he said.
The former aide expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for the opportunity to serve in his administration, describing the experience as a major milestone in his public service journey.
He noted that the trust placed in him by the governor, as well as the leadership lessons he acquired while working closely with the administration, would remain invaluable in his future political and leadership responsibilities.
“Serving in your administration has been one of the greatest honours of my public life. The trust you reposed in me, the access, guidance and leadership lessons I have received under you are privileges I will forever cherish,” Samson said.
He also emphasised that resigning from his role was necessary to ensure transparency and to avoid any possible conflict between his government duties and his political ambition.
According to him, stepping aside demonstrates respect for the office of the governor and allows him to pursue his political aspiration without creating distractions within the administration.
“It is in the spirit of loyalty, transparency and respect for your office that I choose to step aside at this time, so that my political pursuit will in no way conflict with my duties or bring any discomfort to your administration,” he added.
Samson also reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Oborevwori, describing him as a leader whose mentorship and guidance have shaped his political outlook.
“I remain your son and loyal supporter, deeply grateful for your confidence and kindness. I humbly seek your understanding and fatherly blessings as I take this next step in service to our people,” he said.
His resignation comes days after Governor Oborevwori directed all political appointees in the state who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Eze Emu, who explained that the move was in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires certain categories of political appointees to step down before participating in party primaries.
According to the state government, the directive is intended to ensure fairness in the political process and prevent the use of government offices and resources for campaign activities.
Political analysts say the development signals the gradual build-up to the 2027 elections in Delta State, with several aspirants already positioning themselves for various elective offices across the state.
Ughelli South Constituency, which Samson seeks to represent in the Delta State House of Assembly, is considered politically significant within the state due to its active grassroots political structure and large voting population.
Observers note that the race for the seat is expected to attract considerable interest among aspirants from different political blocs, as political realignments continue to shape the state’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
Samson, who has been active in grassroots mobilization and political engagement in his constituency, is expected to begin wider consultations with party leaders, community stakeholders and supporters as he formally launches his bid for the assembly seat.
Supporters of the former aide believe his experience within the state government and his familiarity with grassroots politics could strengthen his chances in the upcoming political contest.
As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify across the country, political observers say more resignations from government positions are likely in the coming months as aspirants comply with electoral regulations and begin full-scale campaigns for elective offices.
