Ogwashi-Uku:Tragedy struck at Ogwashi-Uku Junction in Delta State when a series of road accidents claimed nine lives and left several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the first crash killed two people, after which a speeding Toyota Sienna rammed into sympathizers and bystanders who had gathered at the scene, killing seven more.
Many of the victims were passersby and residents who had rushed to help those caught in the initial collision.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, though the exact casualty figure remains uncertain.
Shocked residents blamed the disaster on poor traffic control, weak enforcement of safety regulations, and delayed emergency response.
If there were proper traffic management and timely intervention, this wouldn’t have escalated into such a calamity, one witness lamented.
Community leaders and motorists have since appealed to the Delta State Government, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies to enforce stricter traffic measures, improve signage at busy junctions, and establish rapid-response units in high-risk areas.
However, the State Sector Public Enlightenment Officer of the FRSC, Superintendent Route Commander Patrick Obiagbo, said the only officially reported incident was a separate crash between Ogwashi-Uku and Issele-Azagba involving a truck and a G.O. Motors vehicle.
He maintained that it occurred on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and resulted only in a minor injury to the driver, with no fatalities recorded.
