TORONTO: A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, has been shot dead at a bus terminal in Toronto, Canada, in what police have confirmed as the city’s first homicide of 2026.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road. Toronto Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 7 p.m.
Investigations revealed that both the victim and the suspect boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect allegedly shot Irorere before fleeing the scene on foot.
Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police later located the suspect inside Yorkdale Mall, where he was arrested. A firearm was also recovered during the operation.
The suspect, identified as Tyrel Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident, has been charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Authorities stated that the suspect has a history of criminal convictions, including attempted murder, assault, robbery and firearms-related offences. Police have urged anyone with useful information to come forward as investigations continue.
