SOKOTO: The Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has officially announced Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH following confirmed sightings of the crescent moon across Nigeria.
The announcement was made in Sokoto through a statement issued by the moon-sighting advisory committee.
Reports from Islamic leaders and regional sighting groups indicated that the new moon was observed on the 29th day of Sha’aban, marking the beginning of the fasting month.
The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, urged Muslims nationwide to commence fasting in line with Islamic teachings.
He encouraged the faithful to use the holy month to pray for peace, national unity, and relief from insecurity affecting parts of the country.
He also appealed for continued prayers for Nigeria’s leaders and for collective efforts toward stability and harmony throughout the fasting period.
