LAGOS: Media personality and journalist, Rufai Oseni, has weighed in on the ongoing impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing the development as a major test of President Bola Tinubu’s political authority within the All-Progressives Congress (APC).
In a post shared on social media on Tuesday, January 20, Rufai argued that if the impeachment process against Governor Fubara succeeds, it would expose President Tinubu’s inability to protect governors aligned with the ruling party.
According to him, the situation sends a troubling signal to governors who have defected or are considering defecting to the APC, as it suggests that party affiliation offers little political protection in times of internal crisis.
Rufai’s comments come amid escalating political tension in Rivers State, where members of the State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
The lawmakers insist that the move is not connected to the prolonged political rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, but is instead based on alleged constitutional and financial infractions by the governor.
They accuse Governor Fubara of spending state funds that were not approved in the budget, a claim the governor’s camp has strongly disputed.
Reacting to the unfolding drama, Rufai maintained that the impeachment process, if allowed to go through, would undermine confidence in President Tinubu’s capacity to manage internal party conflicts and shield APC governors from political attacks.
According to him, If Fubara is impeached, then it’s a big indictment on President Tinubu’s ability to protect APC governors.
The situation continues to generate intense debate online and offline, as Nigerians closely watch how the Presidency and the APC leadership respond to the crisis in Rivers State.
