Gunmen kill four, abduct two in fresh Benue attack

Suspected armed militia have killed at least four persons, including three mourners, and abducted two others in Sati-Ikov community, Ushongo Local Government Area.

The victims were attacked on Saturday night while returning from a burial, in what residents describe as a worsening wave of violence in the area. Several others sustained gunshot injuries, while the assailants also made away with motorcycles and other valuables.

Those abducted reportedly include a patent medicine dealer and a Point of Sale operator within the community.

Confirming the incident, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Mata constituency, Simon Gabo, condemned the killings, describing the situation as alarming.

He said the victims were ambushed in the early hours after attending a burial ceremony.

The armed men shot and killed three of them, took their belongings, robbed residents and abducted two persons. The victims were all young men,” he stated.

Gabo alleged that the attackers are suspected militia members operating from neighbouring Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, accusing them of repeatedly crossing into Ushongo communities to launch attacks before retreating.

According to him, the terrain—characterised by thick forests and mountainous areas—has made it easier for the attackers to carry out their operations.

He further noted that the latest incident is part of a troubling pattern of violence recorded in the area over recent weeks, including killings, injuries and robberies.

The lawmaker said the matter had been reported to security agencies, adding that the Divisional Police Officer had already deployed personnel to the affected community.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the police were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
