Governor Mbah and members of Cabinet Defects to APC, Says State Has Benefited Under Tinubu

ENUGU: Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All-Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to align the state with the federal government as his reason for defection.

The governor made the announcement during a statewide broadcast on Tuesday morning, saying his decision was guided by the desire to sustain Enugu’s development and deepen collaboration with the center.

This move became necessary to connect our dear state to the central government, Mbah stated. Our priority remains the development and prosperity of the people of Enugu.

He also lauded President Bola Tinubu for what he described as the administration’s massive support and unprecedented attention to Enugu State since assuming office.

Under President Tinubu, Enugu State has enjoyed unprecedented support from the Federal Government. We cannot afford to remain isolated from the centre, he said.

The defection was not limited to the governor alone. Mbah was joined by members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, and other key political figures across the state.

Political analysts have described Mbah’s move as a major blow to the PDP in the South-East, which has long been one of the party’s strongholds.

Reports indicate that Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri is also considering a similar move, having allegedly finalized arrangements to join the ruling APC soon.

Earlier this year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno defected to the APC along with their cabinets, signaling what observers see as a broader realignment of political forces ahead of the 2026 general elections.

A grand reception ceremony to formally welcome Governor Mbah into the APC is scheduled to hold in Enugu later today.

The event is expected to be attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Netanwe Yitwalda, several governors, and top party stakeholders.

Mbah’s defection is seen as reshaping the political map of the South-East, further strengthening APC’s presence in a region that has traditionally leaned toward the opposition.
