BENIN-CITY: Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has directed all Commissioners and Special Advisers in his administration to wear the Asiwaju mandate cap as a mark of loyalty and support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Governor Okpebholo gave the directive in Benin City on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of 19 newly appointed Commissioners and several board chairmen and members of state agencies.
The governor warned that any Commissioner who failed to comply with the directive would not be allowed to attend State Executive Council meetings.
“This could not have happened if we did not have a responsible president. We have done many elections here, and the major problem we had was that the president was not with us. But today, we say thank you, Okpebholo stated.
I will not forgive any Commissioner who is not wearing this cap. In our Exco meetings, if you are not wearing a suit and you come without this Asiwaju cap, you will go back,” he added.
The governor’s remarks were greeted with mixed reactions across the state’s political circles, with some interpreting the move as a display of party solidarity while others viewed it as excessive partisanship in governance.
The event also featured the inauguration of the Senior Secondary Education Board and the Edo State Law Reform Commission, both of which the governor said are central to his administration’s reform and development agenda.
Governor Okpebholo, who recently appointed 21 Commissioners and key board members, has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to aligning Edo State’s development strategy with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
