LAGOS: A fire outbreak on Monday affected the old terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, causing panic among airport users before emergency responders successfully moved to contain the situation.
The affected facility, located in Lagos, is currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation aimed at modernizing airport infrastructure and improving passenger experience.
Confirming the development, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Henry Agbebire, disclosed that aviation authorities swiftly responded after receiving reports of the fire.
We are aware of the outbreak, and we are there right now. We will publish a statement shortly, Agbebire said.
He added that FAAN’s emergency and firefighting teams were immediately deployed to the scene to prevent the spread of the fire to other sections of the airport.
According to airport officials, firefighters worked promptly to curtail the blaze and secure surrounding facilities within the terminal complex.
Agbebire assured passengers and airport workers that no casualties or injuries were recorded, stressing that safety measures were activated as soon as the incident occurred.
Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation. No loss of lives has been recorded, he stated.
Authorities have urged travellers and airport users to remain calm while safety officials complete damage assessment and recovery operations at the affected terminal.
The old terminal forms part of ongoing upgrade works designed to enhance operational efficiency at Nigeria’s busiest international gateway.
