FIFA President, Infantino condemns Senegal’s ‘unacceptable’ conduct after chaotic AFCON final

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned what he described as the “unacceptable” behaviour of Senegal players and officials following chaotic scenes that marred the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1–0 in the final, sealed by Pape Gueye’s extra-time goal, but the match was overshadowed by controversy, protests and a temporary walk-out by Senegalese players.

Speaking after the final, Infantino said violence and walk-offs had no place in football, stressing the need for respect for match officials and the integrity of the game.

The drama unfolded late in normal time after a disputed penalty decision sparked outrage among the Senegalese players and technical crew.

In protest, several Senegal players abandoned the pitch, forcing a delay of more than 15 minutes as officials worked to restore order.

After playing resumed, Morocco was awarded a penalty, but Brahim Diaz failed to convert, with his attempted Panenka saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, sending the match into extra time.

Gueye later scored the decisive goal to hand Senegal the title.

While congratulating Senegal on their victory, Infantino criticized the conduct displayed during the final moments of the match.

We witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands, Infantino said. We strongly condemn the behaviour of some supporters, as well as some Senegalese players and members of the technical staff.

It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.

The FIFA president warned that failure to respect officials’ decisions undermines the foundations of football and risks damaging the game’s credibility.
