LAGOS: Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerged as the winner in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, clocking an impressive time of 2:14:06 and securing the grand prize of $50,000. This victory marks Kibet’s second triumph in the competition, following his first win in the 2023 edition.
Kibet, who placed third last year behind compatriot Bernard Sang and fellow Kenyan Cheprot, showed exceptional determination and skill to take the lead this time. Last year’s winner, Bernard Sang, finished with a time of 2:16:49, while Cheprot claimed second place. Kibet’s return to the top is a testament to his resilience and ability to perform on the big stage, cementing his position as a formidable force in marathon racing.
In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa claimed her first victory in the prestigious marathon, completing the 42-kilometer race in 2:37:04. Her win marks a significant achievement in her career, as she fended off fierce competition from both East African and international runners.
The marathon, which attracted thousands of runners from across the globe, began at the iconic Western Avenue in front of the National Stadium in Surulere, and concluded at the breathtaking Eko Atlantic City on Victoria Island.
The 2025 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon once again showcased the dominance of East African athletes, particularly from Kenya and Ethiopia. The event has grown tremendously since its inception, and in 2023, it was awarded a prestigious gold label by World Athletics—a remarkable achievement for an event that started less than eight years ago. This recognition underscores the global significance and high standards of the marathon, drawing even more attention to Lagos as a hub for elite long-distance running.
