LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy age and expectations as the Portuguese legend set yet another international milestone on Tuesday night.
The 40-year-old striker scored twice in Portugal’s 2–2 draw with Hungary to become the all-time top scorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history.
Before the match, Ronaldo shared the record of 39 goals with Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz, but his brace in Budapest took him to 41 goals, setting a new benchmark.
“It’s no secret that representing Portugal means everything to me,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “I’m proud to have reached this milestone for my country. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here. See you in November to finish the job and qualify for the World Cup!”
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, tapping home Nelson Semedo’s low cross. He doubled his tally just before half-time, converting another close-range effort from Nuno Mendes.
Despite his heroics, Portugal was denied a win after Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai equalized in stoppage time, leaving the Seleção five points clear at the top of Group F with two games left.
Portugal will next face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on November 13, needing only a point to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
We slowed down after the second goal and they took advantage, Portugal left-back Nuno Mendes told UEFA after the game. We must stay focused and finish strong in November.
Ronaldo’s goals take his international tally to 143, extending the men’s world record he first set in 2021.
Meanwhile, England, Ivory Coast, Senegal, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar all sealed qualification for the tournament, which kicks off in North America on June 11, 2026. So far, 28 of the 48 teams have booked their tickets.
