South Africa has strengthened its position as the leading destination for highly ranked universities in sub-Saharan Africa, with seven institutions featuring among the region’s top 10 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
The University of Cape Town (UCT) retained its position as the highest-ranked university in Africa, climbing to joint 147th globally in the latest ranking released on Wednesday.
The improvement marks a significant rise from UCT’s joint 164th position in the 2026 edition and represents the university’s strongest performance in seven years.
It is also the only university in sub-Saharan Africa to break into the global top 200.
The 2027 Times Higher Education ranking assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, measuring institutions across teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.
South Africa’s dominance is particularly evident in the top 10, with seven of the leading institutions coming from the country.
The University of the Witwatersrand placed second in sub-Saharan Africa, ranking between 301st and 325th globally.
Stellenbosch University followed in third place at 326–350, while the University of Johannesburg ranked fourth at 351–375.
The University of Pretoria occupied fifth position at 451–500, followed by the University of KwaZulu-Natal at 501–550.
The University of the Western Cape completed South Africa’s representation in the top seven, ranking within the 701–800 global band.
Nigeria’s strongest showing in the regional top 10 came from Covenant University, which shared eighth position with Uganda’s Makerere University and South Africa’s North-West University.
The three institutions were all placed in the 801–1,000 global ranking band.
Covenant University also recorded one of the notable improvements among Nigerian universities, moving from the 1,001–1,200 band in 2026 to 801–1,000 in 2027.
The development puts Covenant University among the highest-ranked Nigerian institutions in the latest Times Higher Education assessment.
The leading institutions in the 2027 ranking are:
- University of Cape Town, South Africa — 147 globally
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa — 301–325
- Stellenbosch University, South Africa — 326–350
- University of Johannesburg, South Africa — 351–375
- University of Pretoria, South Africa — 451–500
- University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa — 501–550
- University of the Western Cape, South Africa — 701–800
- Covenant University, Nigeria — 801–1,000
- Makerere University, Uganda — 801–1,000
- North-West University, South Africa — 801–1,000
Despite South Africa’s dominance at the top, Nigeria recorded the largest number of universities included in the regional ranking.
A total of 29 Nigerian universities featured in the 2027 edition, the highest number from any country in the region.
Other Nigerian universities in the 801–1,000 global band include the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos.
Ghana also had institutions in the same band, including the University of Cape Coast and the University of Ghana.
Overall, representation from sub-Saharan Africa increased to 69 universities from 16 countries, up from 55 institutions in the previous edition.
South Africa had five universities in the global top 500, led by the University of Cape Town at joint 147th.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluates universities using 18 performance indicators grouped into five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.
The indicators include teaching reputation, research productivity, research influence and citations, international collaboration, industry income and patents.
The 2027 rankings were unveiled during the World Academic Summit hosted by the University of Cape Town.
It is important to note that the African comparison highlighted in the ranking is specifically focused on sub-Saharan Africa. Universities in North Africa, including institutions in Egypt and Morocco, are therefore outside the scope of this particular regional comparison.
