Court Grants Malami, Wife, Son ₦500m Bail Each

ABUJA: A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), bail in the sum of ₦500 million, alongside his wife and son, following their arraignment on money laundering charges.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling on Wednesday after the trio were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged financial transactions amounting to about ₦9 billion.

The court ordered that each defendant must provide two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to own landed properties within Maitama, Asokoro or Gwarimpa areas of Abuja.

The title documents of the properties are to be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, while the sureties must also submit affidavits of means.

Justice Nwite further directed Malami to deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the court and restrained him from leaving the country without prior permission.

Both the defendants and their sureties were also instructed to submit two recent passport photographs each to the court registry.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court ordered that Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The trial has been adjourned to February 17 for commencement.

Malami has been in EFCC custody since December 8, 2025, after allegedly failing to meet the administrative bail conditions set by the anti-graft agency.

An earlier application for bail was dismissed by the court, which upheld the legality of his detention.
