Court Grants El-Rufai ₦100 Million Bail, Imposes Tight Conditions in National Security Case

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted bail in the sum of ₦100 million by the Federal High Court in Abuja, following his arraignment on allegations bordering on national security breaches.

The ruling was delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court Abuja, who also imposed strict conditions for the perfection of the bail.

El-Rufai was arraigned by the Department of State Services on a five-count amended charge relating to alleged breaches of national security.

Although he was granted bail, the court set stringent requirements aimed at ensuring compliance and guaranteeing his appearance throughout the trial.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the former governor must produce one surety in like sum of ₦100 million. The surety must:

  • Be a resident of Maitama or Asokoro in Abuja
  • Be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17
  • Provide proof of salary for at least three months
  • Present a bank-authenticated salary verification letter
  • Submit an affidavit of means and recent passport photograph
  • Deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property with the court registry
  • Present a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months
  • Obtain a verification letter from their department

The court also ordered El-Rufai to surrender all international passports to the registry pending the conclusion of the case.

In addition, he must report to the DSS headquarters every last Friday of the month by 10:00 a.m. to sign an attendance register.

Justice Abdulmalik warned that any violation of the bail conditions would automatically lead to its revocation.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given El-Rufai’s status as a former state governor and a prominent political figure.

The stringent bail terms reflect the court’s emphasis on ensuring strict compliance in matters involving national security allegations.

The matter is expected to continue in court in the coming weeks as legal arguments proceed.
