Court Admits More Evidence in EFCC’s $4.5bn Fraud Case Against Emefiele

LAGOS: The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has admitted additional evidence in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor,Godwin Emefiele, over an alleged $4.5 billion fraud.

Justice Rahman Oshodi, presiding over the case, made the ruling on Thursday, October 9, 2025, following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele faces a 19-count charge of corruption, gratification, and abuse of office, while his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, is charged separately for allegedly accepting unlawful gifts.

The court adjourned the case till December 2 and 3, 2025, for a mini-trial.

Emefiele, who served as CBN governor from 2014 to 2023, has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting that his actions were lawful and in Nigeria’s best interest.

The EFCC has previously presented digital evidence, documents, and WhatsApp chats purportedly linked to Emefiele, though the defence team continues to contest their admissibility.

The former apex bank chief was first arraigned in December 2023 after his suspension and arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).
