NEW-YORK: Former boxing champion Christy Martin has spoken out in defense of actress Sydney Sweeney following harsh comments from Ruby Rose about the new biopic Christy.
Martin, whose life inspired the sports drama, praised Sweeney as both a friend and an ally in an Instagram post on Wednesday, saying the Euphoria star worked tirelessly to tell her story with authenticity and compassion.
Syd not only worked her ass off for this film she worked her ass off for me, for my story, and for so many others suffering in silence,” Martin wrote.
Her message came a day after Ruby Rose slammed Sweeney’s performance, calling her a cretin and claiming the actress ruined the film.
Rose said she was originally attached to play a character inspired by Martin’s high school girlfriend but was later replaced.
Despite the film’s disappointing box office debut, earning just $1.3 million in its opening weekend, both Martin and Sweeney have continued to champion its message about strength and survival.
Sweeney wrote on Instagram that Christy was the most impactful project of her life, adding that we don’t always make art for numbers we make it for impact.
The film, directed by David Michôd, was released on November 7 and explores Martin’s rise in the boxing world alongside her struggles with domestic violence and self-identity.
