China Accelerates Tech Race with Space and Deep-Sea Advances

BEIJING: China is rapidly closing the technological gap with the West, investing heavily in space exploration, deep-sea research, and polar operations, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.

Since being sidelined from Europe’s Galileo satellite navigation project, China has developed its own BeiDou network, now used for over 1 trillion location-tracking operations daily.

The country is also advancing reusable rocket technology through private firm LandSpace and expanding low-orbit satellite constellations like Qianfan.

In addition to space, China is increasing its Arctic presence with research vessels, icebreakers, and manned deep-sea dives. Collaboration with Russia on lunar bases and nuclear-powered research stations further underscores Beijing’s strategic ambitions.

Experts say these moves are aimed at achieving technological autonomy and national security, though Western nations view them with caution. China maintains the focus is on resilience and innovation rather than confrontation.
