BIRNI KEBBI: Twenty-four students kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, have been rescued.
Presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, confirming that President Bola Tinubu commended security agencies for safely securing the girls’ release.
I am relieved that all 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must urgently deploy more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to prevent further kidnappings.
My government will provide all necessary support to achieve this,Tinubu said.
The students were abducted last Monday when bandits invaded their school hostel.
In response, Tinubu directed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to relocate to Kebbi to lead coordinated rescue efforts.
Their rescue comes amid a wave of other violent attacks. Just days after the Kebbi abduction, gunmen raided a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, kidnapping 38 worshippers during a vigil.
Another group also attacked St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Niger State’s Agwara LGA, where more than 300 pupils and teachers were taken, according to police and church officials.
The incidents have fueled public frustration and renewed demands for stronger security around schools, especially in rural communities across the North-West.
