Best Universities in Nigeria 2026: UI Beats UNILAG, UNN, ABU and OAU in New Global Ranking

The University of Ibadan (UI) has been ranked as the best university in Nigeria in the latest 2026 Global 2000 Universities Ranking released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The newly released ranking evaluated 21,291 universities worldwide, with only the top 2,000 institutions earning a place on the prestigious global list. Five Nigerian universities made the cut, highlighting the country’s growing presence in global higher education.

Leading the pack is the University of Ibadan, which secured the 1,047th position globally, making it the highest-ranked Nigerian institution on the CWUR list.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), followed in second place among Nigerian universities, ranking 1,533rd in the world.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) came third nationally and occupied the 1,683rd position globally.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, ranked fourth among Nigerian institutions and placed 1,779th worldwide.

Completing the top five is Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which was ranked 1,884th globally.

CWUR uses seven performance indicators grouped into four major categories to assess universities worldwide.

Education (25%) – Measures the academic success of a university’s alumni relative to the institution’s size.

Employability (25%) – Evaluates the professional achievements and career success of graduates.

Faculty (10%) – Assesses the number of faculty members who have received significant academic awards and distinctions.

Research (40%) – Examines research output, high-quality publications, influence, and citations.

The ranking system is widely respected because it relies on objective performance indicators rather than surveys or institutional submissions.

Nigeria continues to attract postgraduate students seeking quality education. Among the institutions frequently recommended for master’s degree programmes are the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Ilorin, and Covenant University.

These universities are recognized for their strong academic reputation, research capacity, postgraduate offerings, and overall student experience.

The latest CWUR ranking further strengthens the University of Ibadan’s reputation as Nigeria’s leading higher institution. The university has consistently performed well in international rankings due to its research output, academic excellence, and contributions to national development.

The result also underscores the competitiveness of Nigeria’s top universities as they continue striving for greater global recognition despite challenges facing the country’s education sector.
