Bayelsa Deputy Governor Sues State Assembly, IGP Over Alleged Impeachment Plot

YENEGOA: Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has filed a suit against the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and several others over an alleged move to impeach him.

In the originating summons filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, through his lawyer, Reuben Egwuaba, Ewhrudjakpo alleged that members of the state assembly were being pressured to remove him from office for refusing to resign from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Douye Diri had recently resigned from the PDP, sparking political realignments within the state’s leadership.

However, Ewhrudjakpo has maintained his loyalty to the PDP a decision that, according to the suit, triggered the impeachment threat.

After hearing the deputy governor’s counsel move an ex-parte motion, Justice Emeka Nwite directed all defendants to appear before the court and show cause why the interim reliefs sought should not be granted.

Those listed as defendants include:

  • Bayelsa State House of Assembly

  • The Speaker of the Assembly

  • The Inspector-General of Police

  • The Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS)

  • The Attorney-General of Bayelsa State

  • The Chief Judge of Bayelsa State

  • The Clerk of the State House of Assembly

Justice Nwite held that the interest of justice will be served by hearing from all parties before any interim order is issued. The case was adjourned to November 13, 2025, for the defendants to show cause.

Ewhrudjakpo is asking the court to restrain the defendants from:

  • Impeaching or removing him from office based on his refusal to defect to the APC or any other party before his tenure expires.

  • Initiating impeachment proceedings or meetings for that purpose.

  • Holding any sittings or conferences aimed at igniting impeachment actions against him.

  • Recognising or appointing any member of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) as deputy governor.

He also seeks an order preventing the IGP, DG of SSS, and Attorney-General from withdrawing his security protection as the duly elected deputy governor.

The development comes amid intense political reshuffling in Bayelsa following Governor Diri’s defection from the PDP.

Reports suggest that several local government chairmen including that of Sagbama LGA, Alice Tange are also facing pressure or threats of removal for not leaving the party.

Ewhrudjakpo’s suit appears to be an early move to shield himself legally from what he describes as a politically motivated impeachment attempt.

The matter will continue in court on November 13, when all parties are expected to present their positions.
