Barcelona Agree $87m Deal to Sign Rodri from Manchester City

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish midfielder Rodri for a reported fee of €75 million ($87 million), according to an AFP report citing a source within the Catalan club.

The deal, which is expected to be officially announced in the coming days, will see the 30-year-old Spain international return to La Liga after seven years in England.

A Barcelona source confirmed the agreement, saying an official announcement on the transfer is expected shortly.

Rodri, who joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, has been one of the key figures in the club’s success under manager Pep Guardiola. His arrival at Camp Nou would represent a major addition to Barcelona’s midfield as the Spanish champions strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The midfielder’s transfer had attracted significant interest, with Real Madrid reportedly monitoring his situation following Spain’s World Cup triumph in July. However, Barcelona ultimately moved ahead of their rivals to secure his signature.

Rodri played a crucial role in Spain’s World Cup success and was recognised as one of the tournament’s outstanding performers. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, becoming the first Manchester City player to receive the prestigious individual award.

Despite struggling with injuries during the past two seasons, Rodri remained a central figure for both club and country when fit.

Barcelona’s decision to pursue the midfielder was also influenced by the injury suffered by Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder is expected to spend several months on the sidelines, increasing the need for additional quality and experience in Barcelona’s midfield.

The Catalan club reportedly had two offers rejected by Manchester City before eventually reaching an agreement on Sunday.

Rodri leaves Manchester City having played a major role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. During his time at the Etihad, he helped City win the 2023 UEFA Champions League and four Premier League titles, among 12 major trophies.

The Spain captain’s move to Barcelona is expected to be one of the biggest transfers of the summer and could significantly strengthen the Spanish champions’ midfield.

Barcelona are also reportedly close to completing a deal for Joao Cancelo after the Portuguese defender spent last season on loan at the club from Al Hilal.
