Africa’s aviation industry is entering a new phase of competition, with Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir, Air Mauritius and Royal Air Maroc among the carriers leading the continent in the latest Skytrax 2026 World Airline Awards rankings.
The rankings highlight major shifts in African aviation as airlines invest in fleet expansion, new routes, improved passenger services and stronger international connections.
Ethiopian Airlines retained the top position among African carriers, maintaining its status as one of the continent’s most important gateways to Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
Ethiopian Airlines once again emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked airline in the 2026 Skytrax rankings.
Its Addis Ababa hub has developed into one of the continent’s most significant aviation gateways, connecting African cities with destinations across several continents.
The airline’s continued investment in modern aircraft, long-haul operations and passenger services has strengthened its position in the increasingly competitive African aviation market.
Its extensive African network also gives the carrier an important role in connecting passengers travelling between countries within the continent and international destinations.
EgyptAir secured the second position and was also recognised as the World’s Most Improved Airline at the 2026 Skytrax awards.
The Egyptian flag carrier received four Skytrax awards, including three major African distinctions.
These included Best Airline Staff in Africa, Best Economy Class Airline in Africa and Best Airline in Africa for Improvement.
The recognition comes as EgyptAir continues efforts to modernise its fleet and expand its international network from its Cairo hub.
For travellers connecting Africa with Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, the airline’s growing network could further strengthen Cairo’s role as an international aviation gateway.
Air Mauritius ranked third among Africa’s leading airlines.
The carrier benefits from Mauritius’ strategic position in the Indian Ocean, linking the island nation with markets in Africa, Europe and Asia.
Its network and service profile also position the airline strongly within the leisure travel market, particularly for travellers seeking luxury holidays, beach destinations and honeymoon experiences.
Royal Air Maroc ranked fourth, continuing to benefit from the strategic importance of its Casablanca hub.
The Moroccan national carrier provides connections between African destinations and major cities across Europe and North America.
RwandAir followed in fifth position, reflecting the growing importance of Kigali as an African aviation hub.
The Rwandan carrier also received recognition for its passenger service, being named Best Airline Staff Service in Africa at the 2026 Skytrax awards.
RwandAir currently operates a network covering destinations in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, while codeshare and interline partnerships extend its reach beyond its own scheduled services.
Its fleet includes Airbus A330 aircraft, Boeing 737-800NGs, Bombardier Q400s and a dedicated freighter, giving the airline capacity across both passenger and cargo markets.
South African Airways occupied sixth place, while Kenya Airways ranked seventh.
Both airlines continue to play important roles in connecting Southern and East Africa with international markets.
Their networks are particularly relevant to travellers combining multiple African destinations, including business centres, safari destinations and coastal holiday locations.
Kenya Airways’ Nairobi hub remains an important gateway into East Africa, while South African Airways continues to serve Johannesburg and other key markets within the region
The final three positions were occupied by low-cost carriers, highlighting the growing importance of affordable air travel in Africa.
FlySafair ranked eighth, followed by Fastjet in ninth place and LIFT in tenth.
The three airlines have contributed to the expansion of relatively affordable domestic and regional air travel, particularly in Southern Africa.
